Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
The verse frames ethical consequence in relational terms: failing to accompany or uphold a righteous elder/king at the decisive moment leads to loss of both transcendent reward (svarga) and worldly well-being (artha), leaving only remorseful remembrance of the other’s merit.
Sañjaya addresses the king, saying that as the king proceeds toward the ‘highest destiny,’ the speaker and two others are not able or not destined to follow; they foresee themselves left behind, deprived of reward and prosperity, consumed by grief while recalling the king’s virtuous deeds.
