अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
उत्सृज्याभरणान्यज्राज्जगृहे वल्कलान्युत । भीमार्जुनयमाश्चैव द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी
utsṛjyābharaṇāny ajrāj jagṛhe valkalāny uta | bhīmārjunayamāś caiva draupadī ca yaśasvinī ||
Disse Vaiśampāyana: Tendo lançado fora seus ornamentos, o rei vestiu roupas de casca de árvore; e assim também fizeram Bhīma, Arjuna, Yama (Yudhiṣṭhira) e a ilustre Draupadī. O gesto assinala uma renúncia deliberada: deixam-se os sinais e prazeres da realeza para abraçar a austeridade ao iniciar a derradeira jornada, em consonância com o ideal do dharma de desapego no fim da vida.
