Educational Q&A

The verse highlights an ethical contrast: most feel sorrow at a hero’s death, but Karṇa and Duryodhana rejoice. It underscores how delight in others’ suffering is a mark of adharma and a corrupted inner disposition (duṣṭātmā), especially in the moral chaos of war.

Sañjaya reports that after a certain hero has been slain (implied by the surrounding context), the general reaction is grief; however, Karṇa and Duryodhana alone laugh loudly, signaling their harshness and antagonism toward the fallen warrior and the opposing side.
