Bhīṣma–Dhanaṃjaya Duel and the Opening Clash
अन्योन्यं प्रत्यभाषन्त तयोर्दृष्टवा पराक्रमम् । न शक््योौ युधि संरब्धौ जेतुमेती कथठ्चन
anyonyam pratyabhāṣanta tayor dṛṣṭvā parākramam | na śakyo yudhi saṃrabdhau jetum etī kathañcana ||
Disse Sañjaya: Ao verem a proeza daqueles dois, disseram uns aos outros: “Quando ambos estão plenamente despertos na batalha, ninguém pode vencê-los.” A observação ressalta a gravidade moral da guerra—o poder heroico, inflamado pela ira e pelo dever, torna-se uma força que resiste à contenção comum e torna incerta a vitória.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights that when great warriors are driven by intense resolve and anger in a dharmic conflict, their power becomes difficult to check; it cautions that war magnifies human capacities beyond easy control, making outcomes uncertain and ethically weighty.
Sañjaya reports that observers, after witnessing the extraordinary valor of two combatants, conclude and say to each other that once both are fully engaged and inflamed in battle, no one can defeat them.
