Ulūpī’s Disclosure and the Saṃjīvana-Maṇi: Arjuna’s Restoration (उलूपी-प्रकटनं संजीवनमणि-स्थापनं च)
विदितं ते महाबाहो यथा दीक्षां चराम्यहम् । न स तावत् प्रवेक्ष्यामि पुरं ते पूुधुलोचन
viditaṃ te mahābāho yathā dīkṣāṃ carāmy aham | na sa tāvat pravekṣyāmi puraṃ te pṛthulocana ||
Arjuna disse: “Ó de braços poderosos, tu já sabes como estou observando a dīkṣā, o voto de consagração, e como me movo sob a sua disciplina. Portanto, ó de olhos amplos, até que esse voto se cumpra, não entrarei na tua cidade.”
अर्जुन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic self-restraint: a vowed discipline (dīkṣā) is to be protected through consistent conduct, even when social convenience or hospitality invites relaxation. Ethical integrity is shown by refusing actions that would compromise the vow.
Arjuna addresses a respected person (called “mighty-armed” and “wide-eyed”) and explains that he is currently under a consecratory observance connected with his mission; therefore he will not enter the other’s city until the observance is completed.
