वैशम्पायन उवाच सतुतं ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा तस्य दुःखेन दुःखित: । उत्तड़कमब्रवीत्‌ वाक्‍्यं नैतच्छक्यं त्वयेति वै

vaiśampāyana uvāca | sa tu taṃ brāhmaṇo bhūtvā tasya duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ | uttaṅkam abravīd vākyaṃ naitac chakyaṃ tvayeti vai |

Vaiśampāyana disse: Indra, condoído do sofrimento de Uttanka, assumiu a forma de um brāhmaṇa e lhe falou: “Ó brāhmaṇa, isto não pode ser realizado por ti. O Nāga-loka fica a milhares de yojanas daqui; abrir um caminho até lá com este simples bastão de madeira não me parece uma tarefa exequível.” A passagem apresenta o conselho compassivo como contenção dhármica—desencorajando um esforço impossível e autodestrutivo, sem negar a dor do buscador.
