Analysis of Tamas and its Marks
वृथारम्भा हि ये केचिद् वृथा दानानि यानि च । वृथा भक्षणमित्येतत् तामसं वृत्तमिष्यते
vṛthārambhā hi ye kecid vṛthā dānāni yāni ca | vṛthā bhakṣaṇam ity etat tāmasaṁ vṛttam iṣyate ||
Vāyu disse: “Quaisquer empreendimentos iniciados em vão, quaisquer dádivas dadas em vão e o comer feito em vão — tal conduta é considerada tāmasa.” Em termos éticos, são ações realizadas sem regra e sem reverência: como dar sem considerar tempo, lugar e destinatário, ou comer sem antes honrar o divino e os hóspedes. Por carecerem de propósito atento e de orientação ao dharma, contam-se como tamásicas.
