Dāyavibhāga (Inheritance Apportionment) and Household Precedence — Dialogue of Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīṣma

बन्धुभि: समनुज्ञाते मन्त्रहोमौ प्रयोजयेत्‌ । तथा सिद्धयन्ति ते मन्त्रा नादत्ताया: कथंचन

bandhubhiḥ samanujñāte mantrahomau prayojayet | tathā siddhyanti te mantrā nādattāyāḥ kathaṃcana ||

Bhishma disse: “Quando os parentes da moça tiverem dado seu consentimento, devem-se empregar os mantras do casamento e a oferenda ao fogo (homa). Só então esses mantras se tornam eficazes e cumprem seu propósito. Para uma jovem que não foi devidamente dada em casamento por seus guardiões, a aplicação ritual dos mantras não tem êxito de modo algum—tal união não é considerada um matrimônio devidamente consagrado pelo rito védico.”
