अविद्दान् भीरुरल्पार्थे विद्याविक्रमदानजम् । यशः प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिण: कृश:
avidvān bhīrur alpārthe vidyā-vikrama-dāna-jam | yaśaḥ prārthayase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ||
Disse o brâmane: “Certamente não és de fato instruído, e ainda assim buscas a fama que se diz nascer do saber. Embora tímido, anseias por renome oriundo do valor; embora possuas pouca riqueza, desejas a reputação de grande doador. Por isso te tornaste magro e pálido como um cervo—consumido pela ânsia de prestígio sem a substância interior que o produz.”
