Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
कीड़ेने कहा--महामते! यह जो बहुत बड़ी बैलगाड़ी आ रही है, इसीकी घर्घराहट सुनकर मुझे भय हो गया है; क्योंकि उसकी यह आवाज बड़ी भयंकर है ।।
kīṭa uvāca—mahāmate! iyaṃ yā mahāśakaṭī samāyāti, tasyā ghoṣaṃ śrutvā me bhayaṃ jātaṃ; bhīṣaṇo hy eṣā ninādaḥ. śrūyate na ca māṃ hanyād iti hāsmād apakrame. śvasatāṃ ca śṛṇomy enaṃ goputrāṇāṃ pratodyatām.
O inseto disse: “Ó sábio! Uma enorme carroça de bois vem por este caminho. Ao ouvir seu estrondo, fui tomado de medo, pois o som é aterrador. À medida que se aproxima, não posso deixar de pensar: ‘Que ela não me atinja e me mate, esmagando-me!’—por isso me apresso a sair de sua passagem. Ouço os bois ofegarem sob o peso imenso, impelidos pelo aguilhão; o ruído deles está muito perto, e também chegam aos meus ouvidos as muitas vozes dos homens que vão sobre a carroça.”
