Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
तस्माद् भवत्वयं नाम्ना भरतो नाम ते सुतः । “पौरव! यह महामना बालक शकुन्तला और दृष्यन्त दोनोंका पुत्र है। हम देवताओंके कहनेसे तुम इसका भरण-पोषण करोगे, इसलिये तुम्हारा यह पुत्र भरतके नामसे विख्यात होगा”
tasmād bhavatv ayaṁ nāmnā bharato nāma te sutaḥ |
Disse Vaiśampāyana: “Portanto, que este teu filho seja conhecido pelo nome Bharata. Pois, por determinação dos deuses, tu assumirás seu sustento e sua criação, e assim ele se tornará célebre como Bharata.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse links name, duty, and identity: a child’s recognized status and fame are grounded in rightful acceptance and responsible upbringing, framed as a dharmic obligation endorsed by higher authority.
The narrator reports the formal naming of the child as Bharata, explaining that because the father will ‘bear’ (support and raise) him—under divine prompting—the boy will be renowned by that name.
