Elāpatra’s Counsel on the Nāgas’ Deliverance

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights moral reciprocity: deceitful conduct tends to return upon the doer. The serpents interpret the loss of amṛta and the presence of a mere replica as a consequence aligned with their own earlier trickery, reinforcing the idea that adharma invites an appropriate counter-result.

The serpents arrive at the spot where amṛta had been placed on a kuśa-grass seat, but discover it has already been taken away. What remains is only a pratimā—an image or decoy made to resemble it—signaling that the real nectar has been removed (by divine agency in the broader episode).
