Ādi-parva Adhyāya 33: Vāsuki’s Council on Averting the Sarpa-satra
तमुवाचाव्ययो देवो वरदो5स्मीति खेचरम् । स वत्रे तव तिछेयमुपरीत्यन्तरिक्षग:,अतः उन अविनाशी भगवान् विष्णुने आकाशचारी गरुडसे कहा--मैं तुम्हें वर देना चाहता हूँ।' अन्तरिक्षमें विचरनेवाले गरुडने यह वर माँगा--'प्रभो! मैं आपके ऊपर (थ्वजमें) स्थित होऊँ"
tam uvāca avyayo devo varado 'smīti khecaram | sa vavre tava tiṣṭheyam uparītya antarīkṣagaḥ ||
Disse Śaunaka: O Senhor divino e imperecível dirigiu-se a Garuḍa, o que percorre os ares, dizendo: “Sou doador de dádivas.” Garuḍa, que se move pelo espaço intermédio, escolheu esta dádiva: “Senhor, permite que eu permaneça acima de ti — estabelecido como teu emblema.”
शौनक उवाच
True devotion may express itself as voluntary service and protective presence; the highest honor is to support the divine purpose rather than seek personal gain.
Viṣṇu offers Garuḍa a boon; Garuḍa asks to remain above Viṣṇu as his emblem (dhvaja), signifying constant attendance and guardianship.
