Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest (सर्पसत्रप्रस्तावना–गुरुपरीक्षा–उत्तङ्कोपाख्यान)

षष्टिक्ष गावस्त्रिशताक्ष धेनव एकं वत्सं सुवते तं दुहन्ति । नानागोष्ठा विहिता एकदोहना- स्तावश्विनौ दुहतो घर्ममुक्थ्यम्‌,दिन एवं रात--ये मनोवांछित फल देनेवाली तीन सौ साठ दुधारू गौएँ हैं। वे सब एक ही संवत्सररूपी बछड़ेको जन्म देती और उसको पुष्ट करती हैं। वह बछड़ा सबका उत्पादक और संहारक है। जिज्ञासु पुरुष उक्त बछड़ेको निमित्त बनाकर उन गौओंसे विभिन्न फल देनेवाली शास्त्रविहित क्रियाएँ दुहते रहते हैं; उन सब क्रियाओंका एक (तत्त्वज्ञानकी इच्छा) ही दोहनीय फल है। पूर्वोक्त गौओंको आप दोनों अश्विनीकुमार ही दुहते हैं

ṣaṣṭiś ca gāvas triśatākṣa dhenava ekaṁ vatsaṁ suvate taṁ duhanti | nānāgoṣṭhā vihitā ekadohanās tāv aśvinau duhato gharma-mukthyam ||

Rāma disse: “Há trezentas e sessenta vacas leiteiras—marcadas por trezentos (e sessenta) ‘olhos’, isto é, os dias—que concedem frutos desejados. Todas dão à luz um único bezerro e o nutrem com o leite. Esse bezerro é ao mesmo tempo gerador e destruidor. O buscador toma esse bezerro como meio e ‘ordenha’ dessas vacas os frutos dos atos prescritos pelas escrituras, embora estejam em muitos currais e destinados a ritos diversos; na verdade, a ordenha é uma. E o verdadeiro ‘leite’ a extrair de todos esses atos também é um: a aspiração ao conhecimento verdadeiro. Sois vós dois, os gêmeos Aśvin, que ordenhais a excelente oblação aquecedora (gharma) e o hino de louvor.”

Educational Q&A

Many scripturally prescribed actions appear diverse, but their highest extractable essence is one: the aspiration for true knowledge. Ritual ‘fruits’ are secondary to the unifying pursuit of jñāna.
