Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest (सर्पसत्रप्रस्तावना–गुरुपरीक्षा–उत्तङ्कोपाख्यान)
त॑ चोपाध्याय: प्रेषषामास वत्सोपमन्यो गा रक्षस्वेति,उसे उपाध्यायने आदेश दिया--“वत्स उपमन्यु! तुम गौओंकी रक्षा करो”
taṁ copādhyāyaḥ preṣayāmāsa vatsopamanyo gā rakṣasveti
Então o mestre o despachou com esta instrução: “Meu filho Upamanyu, vai e guarda as vacas.” O episódio enquadra o treino do discípulo na obediência, na humildade e no serviço disciplinado ao mestre (guru-sevā), como fundamento do saber e do caráter.

The verse highlights guru-śāsana (accepting the teacher’s command) and sevā (service) as essential disciplines that cultivate responsibility, humility, and readiness for higher learning.
The teacher assigns Upamanyu the practical duty of protecting and herding the cows, initiating a test of the student’s obedience and endurance within the traditional training setting.
