जरितारौ कुल॑ होतज्ज्येष्ठत्वेन प्रतिष्ठितम् सारिसृक््क: प्रजायेत पितृणां कुलवर्धन:,पुत्रो! तुम्हारे निर्दयी पिता पहले ही यह कहकर चल दिये कि “जरितारि ज्येष्ठ है, अतः इस कुलकी रक्षाका भार इसीपर होगा। दूसरा पुत्र सारिसृक्क अपने पितरोंके कुलकी वृद्धि करनेवाला होगा। स्तम्बमित्र तपस्या करेगा और द्रोण ब्रह्मवेत्ताओंमें श्रेष्ठ होगा"
Vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca: Jaritārau kule hotaj jyeṣṭhatvena pratiṣṭhitam; Sārisṛkkaḥ prajāyeta pitṝṇāṃ kulavardhanaḥ; Stambhamitraḥ tapasā yuktas tapasyāṃ pravartsyati; Droṇaś ca brahmavettṝṇāṃ śreṣṭho bhaviṣyati.
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Vosso pai, áspero, já havia partido depois de declarar isto: ‘Jaritarī é o primogénito e, por isso, está estabelecido como aquele que suportará a responsabilidade de proteger a linhagem. O segundo filho, Sārisṛkka, nascerá como aumentador da família dos antepassados. Stambhamitra empreenderá austeridades, e Droṇa tornar-se-á o primeiro entre os conhecedores de Brahman.’”
वैशमग्पायन उवाच
The verse frames dharma in terms of inherited responsibility: the eldest is charged with protecting the lineage, another is destined to expand it, one pursues tapas, and one excels in Brahman-knowledge—showing differentiated duties (svadharma) within a family for the welfare of ancestors and descendants.
Vaiśaṃpāyana reports a prior declaration by a father who, before leaving, assigns or foretells the roles of his sons: Jaritarī as the senior guardian of the family, Sārisṛkka as the lineage-enhancer, Stambhamitra as an ascetic, and Droṇa as preeminent among Brahman-knowers.
