Vāraṇāvata-prasaṃsā and the Pāṇḍavas’ Departure (वरणावत-प्रशंसा तथा पाण्डव-प्रयाणम्)
तच्च वाक्यमहं नित्यं मनसा धारयंस्तदा । सो<हं पितृनियोगेन पुत्रलोभाद् यशस्विनीम्,उनकी उस समय कही हुई इस बातको मैं अपने मनमें सदा याद रखता था। कुछ दिनोंके बाद पितरोंकी प्रेरणासे मैंने पुत्र-प्राप्तिके लोभसे परम बुद्धिमती, महान् व्रतका पालन करनेवाली, अन्निहोत्र, सत्र तथा शम-दमके पालनमें मेरे साथ सदा संलग्न रहनेवाली शरद्वानकी पुत्री यशस्विनी कृपीसे, जिसके केश बहुत बड़े नहीं थे, विवाह किया
tac ca vākyam ahaṃ nityaṃ manasā dhārayans tadā | so 'haṃ pitṛniyogena putralobhād yaśasvinīm kṛpīm vivāham akaravam |
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Guardei sempre essas palavras em minha mente. Depois, em obediência à injunção dos Pitṛs (os ancestrais) e movido pelo desejo de obter um filho, casei-me com a ilustre Kṛpī, filha de Śaradvat.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharma as obedience to legitimate ancestral injunctions and the ethical importance placed on continuing the family line; personal desire (for a son) is presented within a duty-bound framework rather than as mere indulgence.
The speaker says he continually remembered a prior statement, and later—prompted by the ancestors’ command and the wish for a son—he married Kṛpī, identified as the daughter of Śaradvat.
