Vāraṇāvata-prasaṃsā and the Pāṇḍavas’ Departure (वरणावत-प्रशंसा तथा पाण्डव-प्रयाणम्)
हुपद उवाच अकृतेयं तव प्रज्ञा ब्रह्मनू नातिसमञ्जसा । यन्मां ब्रवीषि प्रसभं॑ सखा ते5हमिति द्विज,द्रपदने कहा--ब्रह्मन! तुम्हारी बुद्धि सर्वथा संस्कारशून्य--अपरिपक्व है। तुम्हारी यह बुद्धि यथार्थ नहीं है। तभी तो तुम धृष्टतापूर्वक मुझसे कह रहे हो कि “राजन! मैं तुम्हारा सखा हूँ
hupada uvāca | akṛteyaṃ tava prajñā brahmanū nātisamañjasā | yan māṃ bravīṣi prasabhaṃ sakhā te ’ham iti dvija ||
Drupada disse: “Ó brâmane, teu entendimento é rude e não está bem ajustado ao que convém. Por isso me falas com tamanha ousadia, dizendo: ‘Sou teu amigo’, ó duas-vezes-nascido.”
हुपद उवाच
The verse highlights ethical restraint in speech and the importance of cultivated discernment (prajñā). Claiming intimacy or equality (“I am your friend”) without proper basis is portrayed as impropriety arising from an unrefined understanding.
Hupada rebukes a Brahmin who addresses him with undue familiarity. He interprets the Brahmin’s bold claim of friendship as evidence of immature judgment and a failure to observe what is socially and morally fitting.
