Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow
ताभ्यां सह समा: सप्त विहरन् पृथिवीपति: । विचित्रवीर्यस्तरुणो यक्ष्मणा समगृहत,राजा विचित्रवीर्यने उन दोनों पत्नियोंके साथ सात वर्षोतक निरन्तर विहार किया; अतः उस असंयमके परिणामस्वरूप वे युवावस्थामें ही राजयक्ष्माके शिकार हो गये
tābhyāṃ saha samāḥ sapta viharan pṛthivīpatiḥ | vicitravīryas taruṇo yakṣmaṇā samagṛhata ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: O rei, deleitando-se com aquelas duas esposas, passou sete anos em prazer contínuo. Como consequência dessa vida indulgente e sem disciplina, o jovem Vicitravīrya foi acometido pela consunção (yakṣmā) ainda na juventude.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores a moral-ethical link between lack of restraint (especially in sensual enjoyment) and harmful consequences, reminding rulers in particular that self-control supports health, stability, and dharmic governance.
Vaiśampāyana reports that King Vicitravīrya spent seven years in continual enjoyment with his two wives, after which he was afflicted by yakṣmā (a wasting disease) while still young.
