Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda)

Afterlife Stage: Yamaloka Journey

Dosha: Vata

Concept: For devotees free from food-craving, udāna-vāyu moves upward and blocks downward fall to lower realms.

Vedantic Theme: Bhakti and vairāgya refine the subtle mechanism at death; prāṇa’s directionality mirrors inner orientation (saṃskāra) and gati.

Application: Cultivate devotion and restraint (especially at life’s end); practice moderation in food and cravings; maintain remembrance and sattvic habits to support an ‘upward’ death-transition.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: subtle-body pathway (prāṇa-vāyu movement)

FAQs

This verse states that Udāna is the upward-moving vital wind; at the time of death it supports ascent, and for devoted, desireless persons it blocks descent to lower destinations.

It links the soul’s post-death trajectory to the movement of prāṇa—specifically Udāna’s upward motion—implying that inner devotion and reduced craving align the subtle forces toward higher passage rather than downward fall.

Cultivate bhakti and restraint (especially reducing compulsive craving and attachment); these dispositions are presented as shaping one’s subtle direction at life’s end toward an uplifted state.
