Sense-Discipline and Exclusive Refuge in Viṣṇu
Lord Vishnu (Hari) instructing Garuda (Khagendra)
Concept: Exclusive devotion to Hari; the unseen Lord known by name is eternally the giver of results—without Him worship would be fruitless.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara as antaryāmin and karmaphala-dātā; nāma as a valid support for devotion when the Lord is not directly perceived.
Application: Maintain single-pointed devotion; use nāma-japa as a stable practice; evaluate objects of worship by alignment with śāstra and lasting refuge.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.28.106 (upright conduct + Viṣṇu-bhakti); Garuda Purana 3.28.108 (non-vaidika worship leading to suffering and Yama’s realm)
This verse asserts that lasting protection and the reliable bestowal of results (phala) ultimately depend on Hari; therefore, devotion should not be diverted to other refuges when seeking spiritual security.
It frames Hari as the eternal phala-prada (giver of results), implying that even when God is not directly perceived (adṛṣṭa), the efficacy of worship rests on His sustaining power.
Choose a clear spiritual center—here, Hari—and practice steady devotion and ethical living, rather than relying on shifting external protectors when facing anxiety, danger, or uncertainty.
