FAQs

It gives a graded rule for expiation/purification (śuddhi/prāyaścitta): different varnas may complete a reduced fraction of the prescribed act, and for the Śūdra purification is linked to performing a quarter plus giving dāna (charity).

Alongside ritual, mythology, and other sciences, the Agni Purana also preserves dharma-śāstra style norms—here, a procedural rule for penance and social-ritual regulation—showing its compendium character across practical religious law.

It teaches that purification can be attained through proportionate observance of penance and compensatory merit (especially dāna), emphasizing intention, capacity, and prescribed dharmic means to remove impurity or fault.
