Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Puja-vidhi","practical_application":"Quantified homa guidance: tarpana with ghee to the deity’s mūrti; perform aṅga-homa at one-tenth count; choose 100 or 1000 offerings using ghee, samidh, or sesame as oblation media.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Formula","entry_title":"Tarpana and Aṅga-homa Counts (Daśāṃśa Rule) with Oblation Options","lookup_keywords":["tarpana","aṅga-homa","daśāṃśa","śata-sahasra","tilāḥ"],"quick_summary":"Satiate the deity with ghee offerings; perform limb-offerings at one-tenth of the main count, typically 100 or 1000 oblations, using ghee, fuel-sticks, or sesame as appropriate."}
Concept: Discipline through measure (saṅkhyā) and proportionality (daśāṃśa) is integral to ritual completeness.
Application: Plan offerings with counts and materials beforehand; keep aṅga-homa proportional to the main homa to maintain ritual balance.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Homa and Tarpana procedures)
Primary Rasa: Shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A priest performs repeated ghee oblations, then a smaller set of limb-offerings at one-tenth count; offerings include ghee, samidh sticks, and sesame seeds arranged beside the fire.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural: rhythmic repetition of offerings into flame, piles of samidh and sesame bowls, tally marks implied, deity’s presence suggested above the fire, bold warm palette.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore: ornate yajña scene with gold-highlighted ghee pot and ladle, sesame bowl and samidh bundle, visual emphasis on abundance (100/1000) through repeated motifs and decorative patterning.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore: clear instructional layout—main homa count and smaller aṅga-homa count shown by grouped offerings, neat implements, soft colors, precise detailing.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature: detailed ritual still-life—ghee vessel, sesame, sticks—priest offering into fire, attendants counting on beads, refined interior setting."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":null,"pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: tarpayenmūrter = tarpayet + mūrteḥ; daśāṃśenāṅgahomakam = daśa-aṃśena + aṅga-homakam; vāj(y)ādyaiḥ = vā + ājya-ādyaiḥ (IAST shows vājyādyaiḥ by sandhi/orthography).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 24 (tarpana; aṅga-nyāsa/aṅga-homa; homa-saṅkhyā)
It specifies a homa protocol: perform tarpana to the deity’s embodied form with ghee, then complete an aṅga-homa as a subsidiary set equal to one-tenth of the main offering-count; acceptable materials include ghee, samidh fuel-sticks, and sesame.
It preserves precise operational rules (counts, proportions, and permitted substances) for ritual performance—showing the Agni Purana’s role as a practical manual alongside its theology, ethics, and other sciences.
By correctly proportioning the main oblations and the aṅga-homa, the rite is considered complete and well-formed, supporting purification and the intended devotional/merit-bearing outcome of the homa.
