Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Cosmology","secondary_vidya":"Philosophy","practical_application":"Explains the tanmātra-to-mahābhūta sequence (sound→ether, touch→air, form→fire), used in meditation on sensory experience and in traditional element-based reasoning across Indian sciences.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Tanmātra-krama: Śabda→Ākāśa, Sparśa→Vāyu, Rūpa→Agni","lookup_keywords":["tanmatra","akasha shabda","vayu sparsha","agni rupa","bhuta-utpatti"],"quick_summary":"Elements arise as carriers of specific subtle potentials: ether from sound, air from touch, fire from form. This maps perception to cosmology and supports practices that withdraw senses back into their subtle causes."}

Concept: Perceptual qualities (tanmātras) are causal seeds of elements; the world is structured as layered potentials becoming tangible.

Application: Pratyāhāra-style reflection: trace sensory inputs back—sound to space, touch to air, sight to fire—to reduce reactivity and stabilize attention.

Khanda Section: Sankhya–Tattva-Srishti (Cosmology of the Tanmatras and Mahabhutas)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A progressive chain: from a central ahaṅkāra source, a subtle ‘sound’ wave condenses into ether; ether yields a wind-current embodying touch; wind yields a flame embodying form/light.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, sequential panels: sound-waves in dark space, then stylized wind swirls, then sacred flame; bold contours, traditional pigments, temple narrative layout","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore, three-tier composition with gold highlights: ākāśa as dark-blue field with sound glyphs, vāyu as swirling silver-white, agni as red-gold flame, ornate borders","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, instructional step-diagram with arrows, subtle icons for śabda/sparśa/rūpa, clean labeling, soft shading","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, scientific illustration vibe: delicate waveforms, wind ribbons, flame tongues; fine brushwork, pale background, marginal notes"}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Shankarabharanam","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}

FAQs

It teaches the Sāṅkhya-style technical sequence of manifestation: from ahaṅkāra arise the subtle qualities (tanmātras) that characterize the gross elements—ether as sound, air as touch, and fire as form—used as a doctrinal framework in Purāṇic cosmology.

By embedding a concise Sāṅkhya cosmological model (tanmātra–mahābhūta evolution) inside a Purāṇa, it demonstrates the text’s encyclopedic scope—integrating philosophy and technical metaphysics alongside ritual, dharma, and other sciences.

It supports viveka (discriminative insight) by mapping how sensory qualities and elements arise, encouraging detachment from sense-objects and reinforcing contemplation on prakṛti’s evolution as a step toward liberation-oriented understanding.
