Mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | gurubhir aniyamair yukto bharato nāma pāvakaḥ | agniḥ puṣṭimatir nāma tuṣṭaḥ puṣṭiṃ prayacchati | bharaty eṣa prajāḥ sarvās tato bharata ucyate |
ਮਾਰਕੰਡੇਯ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ— ਯੁਧਿਸ਼ਠਿਰ! ‘ਭਰਤ’ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਵਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਭਾਰੀ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਠੋਰ ਵਰਤ-ਆਚਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਯੁਕਤ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਮ੍ਰਿੱਧੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਮ ‘ਪੁਸ਼ਟਿਮਤੀ’ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਰਨ-ਪੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ਭਰਤ’ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
