चरेद्‌ धर्मानकटुको मुज्चेत्‌ स्नेह न चास्तिक: । अनुशंसश्चरेदर्थ चरेत्‌ काममनुद्धत:

Transliteration

bhīṣma uvāca | cared dharmān akaṭuko muñcet snehaṃ na cāstikaḥ | anuśaṃsaś cared arthaṃ caret kāmam anuddhataḥ ||

Translation

ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਕਰ, ਪਰ ਵਰਤਾਓ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਟੁਤਾ ਨਾ ਆਉਣ ਦੇ। ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ-ਧਰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਸਥਾ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਵੀ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਨੇਹ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਨਾ ਛੱਡ। ਕ੍ਰੂਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਏ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਧਨ ਕਮਾ, ਅਤੇ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਨਾ ਲੰਘਦਿਆਂ ਧਰਮਸੰਗਤ ਭੋਗ ਕਰ—ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਯਮ ਤੇ ਸਦਭਾਵ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
