केनैष धर्म: कथितो देवेन ऋषिणापि वा
Janamejaya uvāca | kenaiṣa dharmaḥ kathito devena ṛṣiṇāpi vā, bhagavan? asya bhaktirūpasya dharmasya kaḥ devatā vā ṛṣiḥ vā upadeṣṭā? ananya-bhaktānāṃ jīvanacaryā kā? sa ca kadā prācīnaḥ pravṛttaḥ? mama saṃśayaṃ nivāraya; etad-viṣayaṃ śrotuṃ mama manasi mahān autkaṇṭhyaḥ ||
ਜਨਮੇਜਯ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ— “ਭਗਵਨ! ਇਹ ਧਰਮ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ—ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਨੇ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਨੇ? ਭਕਤੀ-ਰੂਪ ਇਸ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਕੌਣ ਸੀ? ਅਨਨ੍ਯ ਭਕਤੀ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਚਰਿਆ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਕਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਚੱਲੀ ਆ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ? ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰੋ; ਇਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਨ ਲਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਉਤਸੁਕ ਹੈ।”
