Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins
ततश्रिन्तामनुप्राप्त: कतमद्दैवतं तु तत् यन्ये द्रुतं प्रसीदेत मानुषैरजडीकृतम्
tataś cintām anuprāptaḥ katamad daivataṃ tu tat | yan me drutaṃ prasīdet mānuṣair ajadīkṛtam ||
ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਤਦ ਉਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ: ‘ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਛੇਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਉਪਾਸਨਾ-ਰੀਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਤੇ ਯਾਂਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ?’
