Adhyāya 174: Karma as an inescapable companion (कर्मानुगमन-उपदेश)
yasmān mūḍho mama sabhāṃ nāgato 'sau bakādhamaḥ | tasmād vadhaṃ sa duṣṭātmā nacirāt samavāpsyati ||
Hypocrisy and moral delusion (appearing virtuous while acting basely) are condemned; such conduct leads to swift downfall and punitive consequences, reflecting the ethical idea that adharma brings its own retribution.
Bhishma remarks that a certain contemptible, hypocritical person did not present himself in Bhishma’s assembly; Bhishma then declares that, as a result, the man will soon meet death—framed as an impending punishment for his wickedness.
