Vyāghra–Gomāyu Saṃvāda (व्याघ्रगोमायु संवाद) — Testing Character Beneath Appearances
(पर्णाहार: कदाचिच्च नियमव्रतवानपि । कदाचिदुदकेनापि वर्तयन्ननुयन्त्रित: ।।
Bhīṣma uvāca — parṇāhāraḥ kadācic ca niyamavratavān api | kadācid udakena api vartayann anuyantritaḥ || śmaśāne tasya cāvāso gomāyoḥ sammato 'bhavat | janmabhūmy-anurodhāc ca nānyāvāsam arocayat ||
ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਵਰਤ ਤੇ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਪੱਤਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ; ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੰਯਮ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਗਿੱਦੜ ਦਾ ਵਾਸ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ਾਨ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਗਿਆ; ਜਨਮ-ਭੂਮੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਰਾਗ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹੀ ਥਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਸੀ, ਹੋਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਸਣ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਚੀ ਨਾ ਸੀ।
