Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how pride and long-standing enmity intensify conflict in war; ethically, it cautions that abhimāna (arrogant self-assertion) fuels destructive rivalry even among great warriors, contrasting with the ideal of disciplined action guided by dharma.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīma directly takes on Duryodhana in battle, marking a focused confrontation between two principal opponents whose hostility is well established.
