उत्पातवर्णनम् (Utpāta-varṇanam) — Catalogue of Portents
उपायविजयं श्रेष्ठमाहुभेंदेन मध्यमम् । जघन्य एष विजयो यो युद्धेन विशाम्पते
upāyavijayaṁ śreṣṭham āhur bhedena madhyamam | jaghanya eṣa vijayo yo yuddhena viśāmpate rājān ||
ਨੀਤੀ-ਉਪਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਤਮ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ; ਭੇਦ-ਨੀਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰੀ ਦੀ ਫੌਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੁੱਟ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਜਿੱਤ ਮਿਲੇ, ਉਹ ਮੱਧਮ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਤਲੋ-ਗਾਰਤ ਤੇ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਜਿੱਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋਵੇ, ਹੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਾਜਨ, ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਚ ਜਿੱਤ ਹੈ।
