Chapter 230: शकुनानि (Śakunāni) — Omens
क्रूरेषु दीप्ता विज्ञेया ऋक्षलग्नग्रहादिषु धूमिता सा तु विज्ञेया याङ्गमिष्यति भास्करः
krūreṣu dīptā vijñeyā ṛkṣalagnagrahādiṣu dhūmitā sā tu vijñeyā yāṅgamiṣyati bhāskaraḥ
Lord Agni (narrating to sage Vasiṣṭha)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Jyotisha","secondary_vidya":"Samanya","practical_application":"Diagnose solar omens by correlating the Sun’s visible quality (fiery vs smoky) with malefic configurations (nakṣatra/lagna/graha) and with imminent solar transition (saṅkrānti-like movement).","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Description","entry_title":"Sūrya-gati-lakṣaṇa: Dīpta vs Dhūmita in Krūra-yoga and Gati-parivartana","lookup_keywords":["sūrya-lakṣaṇa","krūra-yoga","ṛkṣa","lagna","dhūmita"],"quick_summary":"A fiery Sun-sign is read when the Sun is in harsh configurations involving nakṣatra, lagna, and planets; a smoky appearance indicates the Sun is about to move onward. This links observational sky-phenomena with calendrical/astrological transitions."}
Concept: Bandhu between dṛśya (visible appearance) and adṛśya (astrological configuration): perceptible qualities are mapped to graha-yoga and gati (motion) states.
Application: If the Sun appears unusually fiery under known malefic yogas, treat as warning; if smoky, anticipate imminent positional change and adjust muhūrta/ritual timing accordingly.
Khanda Section: Jyotiṣa (Nimitta-śāstra / Sūrya-gati-lakṣaṇa)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"The Sun shown in two modes: intensely fiery amid malefic planetary markers around a zodiac wheel, and smoky/veiled as it approaches a boundary between signs; an astrologer notes nakṣatra/lagna/graha factors.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, zodiac wheel with stylized grahas; left: blazing sun with sharp flames near ‘krūra’ symbols; right: sun with smoky halo crossing a sign boundary; astrologer with palm-leaf; warm reds and blacks.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, central sun-disc with gold foil rays; surrounding graha icons; a second sun-disc with silver-gray smoky aureole near a gilded zodiac border; ornate frame and embossing.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, technical illustration: labeled nakṣatra band, lagna marker, graha positions; two sun renderings (dīpta, dhūmita) with arrows indicating ‘about to move’; neat annotations.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, astronomers on a rooftop with instruments; sky shows a fiery sun and, in an inset, a smoky sun near a zodiac boundary; delicate gradients and precise costume detail."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Suryakant","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: ṛkṣalagnagrahādiṣu → ṛkṣa-lagna-graha-ādiṣu; yāṅgamiṣyati → yā aṅgam-iṣyati (sandhi: ā + a → ā; nasalization in writing); dīptā/vijñeyā agree with implied ‘dīptiḥ’ (f.).

It gives a Jyotiṣa/Nimitta rule: interpret the Sun’s observed quality—“blazing” in inauspicious nakṣatra/lagna/planetary settings, and “smoky” as a sign the Sun is about to shift onward to a new placement.
Alongside theology and ritual, the Agni Purāṇa preserves applied technical lore—here, observational astrology/omen-reading that links visible solar phenomena to nakṣatra, lagna, and graha frameworks used in predictive practice.
By reading celestial signs correctly and timing actions accordingly, one avoids inauspicious undertakings and aligns choices with dharma, thereby reducing adverse outcomes attributed to unfavourable cosmic conditions.
