Inside Sukta 62

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

An imperative call to bring forward uplifting praise because Indra delights in it, linking hymn and Soma to growth and auspicious gifts.

  2. Development

Indra’s greatness is amplified by the community’s chants; his heroic power is affirmed as sanctioned by the gods and aligned with purposeful will (kratu).

  3. Climax

Indra is proclaimed guardian-lord of all becoming (bhuvaḥ viśvasya gopatiḥ), emphasizing universal sovereignty and protection.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends on truth-centered praise and a moral-ritual contrast: great smiting for the non-presser, many lights for the Soma-presser—closing again with ‘auspicious are Indra’s gifts.’

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is lauded as the foremost wielder of vīrya (heroic power), delighted by Soma and strengthened by hymns; he is “puruṣṭuta” (much-praised) and a giver of beneficent boons (rātayaḥ). He is portrayed as the protector-lord who upholds the community that performs the rite and speaks truth in praise.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta through victorious power—protector of the worlds’ order, breaker of obstacles, and patron of fertility, strength, and expansion for those aligned with the sacrificial economy.
  • Inner significanceRepresents awakened will, courage, and victorious clarity energized by disciplined offering (Soma as concentrated aspiration). He rewards truthful intention and sustained practice, while inertia/neglect leads to inner diminishment.
