Inside Sukta 61

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poets bring forward a nourishing, strengthening hymn to Indra as a true gift of sacred speech.

  2. Development

Indra’s might is described as overflowing and world-encompassing; he is portrayed as self-ruling, battle-ready, and supported by universal impulses, while the hymn ties poetic formulation to divine empowerment.

  3. Climax

The revelation of Indra’s mahitva spanning heaven, earth, and midspace, and his growth ‘for battle’ toward the victory of light.

  4. Where it settles

The Gotamas seal their well-woven words, asking Indra to place all-formed inspiration within them and to bring swift, dawn-born treasure of intelligence.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as svarāṭ (self-ruling), vast in might, a victorious warrior who expands beyond the worlds, and a receiver of brahmāṇi (sacred utterances) that empower his deeds. He is invoked as the bull of strength, the master of inspired speech, and the champion who wins battles and releases the light.
  • Cosmic functionUpholder of ṛta through victory over obstructive forces; releaser of light, waters, and vitality; protector of the sacrificer and giver of wealth and strength.
  • Inner significanceEmbodies decisive will, courage, and the breakthrough force of awakened intelligence that defeats inner inertia and opens the ‘light’ of clarity and right action.

The seer

  • Gautama (Gautamāsaḥ)Gautama gotra (Gotamas) · A प्रमुख (prominent) early Rigvedic seer-family noted for crafting powerful Indra hymns and for refining the idiom of brahman (sacred formulation) as an effective force in ritual and inspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions

It praises Indra’s immense, world-filling power and asks him to grant victory, strength, and inspired intelligence to the poets and worshippers.

In Vedic thought, well-formed sacred speech (brahmāṇi/stoma) is itself an offering that strengthens the deity and helps bring the requested blessings into effect.

It is especially fitting in Indra worship during fire offerings and Soma-related rites, and its closing prayer makes it particularly apt for dawn recitation (prātaḥ).
