Inside Sukta 151

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by likening the deity to a ‘friend’ brought forth by seekers of luminous herds, establishing Mitra-Varuṇa as beloved guardians whose force makes the worlds tremble.

  2. Development

Imagery expands into cosmic operations: the lords open the wide gate, release spotless streams, and orchestrate the ascent toward the sun and the descent of dawn’s manifestation.

  3. Climax

A peak assertion of their life-giving bounty and sovereign power—granting rich vitality and fulfillment through their māyā (wise formative power) and near help.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by declaring their godhead unsurpassed by heavens, days, or rivers, and by denying the ‘paṇis’ (dark traffickers) any share in their largesse, reinforcing protection and moral victory.

The deity: Mitra-Varuṇa

  • In the VedaMitra and Varuṇa are invoked together as harmonious sovereigns: Mitra embodies friendship, covenant, and concord, while Varuṇa embodies vastness, moral oversight, and binding law; together they are guardians of truth and order who “answer” the worshipper’s word with favor.
  • Cosmic functionThey maintain ṛta by stabilizing heaven and earth, regulating waters and luminous cycles (dawn and sun), and ensuring social and cosmic contracts are upheld.
  • Inner significanceWithin the seeker, Mitra-Varuṇa symbolize the balanced governance of consciousness: benevolent clarity and trust (Mitra) joined to inward conscience and self-discipline (Varuṇa), producing integrity, protection, and right action.

The seer

  • Māmateya (traditionally Dīrghatamas Māmateya)Māmateya (Angirasa-associated seer line in later tradition) · A visionary poet credited with profound hymns on ṛta, the Waters, and the hidden workings of the gods; often linked with enigmatic, symbolic diction.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are twin Vedic lords invoked together: Mitra represents friendship and agreement, and Varuṇa represents vast moral law and restraint. Together they protect beings and uphold cosmic order (ṛta).

It is a poetic image for removing obstruction and allowing the flow of life and light—pure streams, dawn, and the sun’s radiance—into the world and into the worshipper’s path.

The paṇis symbolize forces that hoard, obscure, or oppose the right order. The hymn declares that such forces cannot obtain Mitra-Varuṇa’s divine status or their generous gifts.
