in Kārttika
śaunaka uvāca | kārttikasya ca māhātmyaṃ brūhi sūta mamāgrataḥ | tadvratasya phalaṃ kiṃ vā doṣaṃ kiṃ tadakurvataḥ

Śaunaka asks Sūta to explain the sacred greatness (māhātmya) of the month of Kārttika, the benefits (phala) of its vow, and the fault (doṣa) of neglecting that vow.
It frames Kārttika observance as a significant dharmic practice with definite spiritual results for performance and moral/spiritual consequences for non-performance.
The verse highlights accountability in religious practice: actions (observing a vow) have outcomes, and neglect of valued duties is treated as a fault to be understood and avoided.
