Mental suffering is traced to sneha—clinging attachment. When one fastens the mind to people, possessions, or outcomes, that very dependence makes one vulnerable to loss, fear, and grief; thus attachment becomes the causal doorway to duḥkha.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a reflective, didactic point is being stated: the text identifies the psychological and ethical mechanism by which beings become bound to sorrow—through attachment that leads them to cling and thereby encounter suffering.
