विदुर उवाच
Vidura signals that moral reasoning should be guided by established precedents (itihāsa): when a dispute arises, one should examine earlier exemplars and weigh conduct by dharma rather than by mere power or desire.
Vidura introduces an old story as an illustrative case: a debate or conflict between Virocana and Sudhanvan, triggered by the matter of Keśinī, which will serve as a moral example for the present discussion.
