Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge

“O mighty-armed one, accept this and thereby safeguard the honor and continuity of your lineage. Because you have fallen from your own bounds of propriety, she is not obtaining a husband.” When Paraśurāma—conqueror of enemy strongholds—spoke in this manner, I replied to him plainly: “O brahmarṣi, this cannot happen again in that way. What purpose would your exertion serve in this matter?” The exchange frames a conflict between personal restraint and the protection of family order, and it asserts a firm ethical boundary: once a limit has been crossed, mere force or effort cannot restore what propriety has forfeited.

Educational Q&A

The passage stresses maryādā—ethical and social boundaries—as essential for protecting kula (lineage and honor). When one falls from propriety, certain outcomes (like a rightful marriage alliance) may no longer be attainable, and sheer force or effort cannot undo the moral consequence.

Paraśurāma urges the addressed hero to accept something (a proposed arrangement or responsibility) to protect the family line, arguing that the hero’s lapse in propriety has blocked the woman’s chance of obtaining a husband. The narrator responds firmly that such a course cannot happen again and questions the usefulness of Paraśurāma’s exertion in pressing it.
