Duryodhana’s Post-Duel Lament and Instructions (भग्नसक्थस्य विलापः)
vaiśampāyana uvāca—hataṃ duryodhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṃyuge | vyutkramya samayaṃ rājan dhārtarāṣṭraṃ mahābalam ||
Even in a righteous cause, violating agreed norms of conduct (samaya) creates moral fallout: the victory becomes ethically troubled, and the righteous-minded (like Yudhiṣṭhira) experience fear and inner conflict about dharma and its consequences.
After the mace-duel, Duryodhana is seen slain by Bhīma. The text notes that the killing involved a breach of the duel’s rule, and this fact triggers deep apprehension in Yudhiṣṭhira, who foresees blame, sin, or repercussions arising from the transgression.
