Austerity becomes ethically and spiritually potent when it is free from greed and desire for personal gain; such selfless discipline (niṣkāma tapas) is praised as worthy of divine grace and extraordinary reward.
Bhishma, speaking in the Anushasana Parva, recounts a moment where a divine woman is commended for performing austerities without greed or wish-fulfillment motives, and he (or the narrator within the cited episode) grants her the boon of immortality as a response to that purity of intent.
