भीष्म उवाच
The verse praises an ideal of dharmic continuity: spiritual discipline (tapas) and realization/learning (brahmavidyā) are presented as the true forces that strengthen a sacred lineage and establish enduring social-spiritual institutions like gotras.
Bhishma is describing the descendants (sons) of a previously mentioned figure, characterizing them as noble ascetics and knowers of Brahman who expanded the Brahmin tradition and became recognized founders of clan lineages (gotras).
