ଭଗବାନ୍ ଅଗ୍ନି ଛନ୍ଦଃସାରରେ ‘ପାଦ’କୁ ଛନ୍ଦର ମୂଳ ଏକକ ଭାବେ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଧାରଣ କରି, ଆପଦ-ପୂରଣ (ଅକ୍ଷର/ମାତ୍ରା ପୂର୍ତ୍ତି) ପବିତ୍ର ବର୍ଗୀକରଣ ଦ୍ୱାରା କିପରି ନିୟନ୍ତ୍ରିତ ହୁଏ ତାହା ଦେଖାନ୍ତି। ଛନ୍ଦଭେଦାନୁସାରେ ଅକ୍ଷର-ନିବେଶର ଦେବତା-ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧ ଦିଆଯାଏ—ଗାୟତ୍ରୀରେ ବସୁ, ଜଗତୀରେ ଆଦିତ୍ୟ, ବିରାଜରେ ଦିଗ୍ଦେବତା। ପରେ ଏକପାଦରୁ ଚତୁଷ୍ପାଦ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଛନ୍ଦ, ତ୍ରିପାଦ ବିଶେଷତା, ଏବଂ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନଶୀଳ ଅକ୍ଷରସଂଖ୍ୟା (ସପ୍ତାକ୍ଷରୀ ପାଦ ସହ) ବ୍ୟାଖ୍ୟା କରନ୍ତି। ନିବୃତ, ନାଗୀ, ବାରାହୀ; ଉଷ୍ଣିକ, ପରୋଷ୍ଣିକ, ଅନୁଷ୍ଟୁଭ; ମହାବୃହତୀ; ପଙ୍କ୍ତି-ପ୍ରକାର ଭଣ୍ଡିଲ ଆଦି ନାମିତ ଛନ୍ଦ ଓ ଉପଭେଦ, ସହିତ ବୃହତୀର ଆଗ/ମଧ୍ୟ/ଊର୍ଧ୍ୱ ବିନ୍ୟାସ ଓ ଦିଗ-ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧୀ ‘ନବକା’ ନିବେଶ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖ ଅଛି। ଛନ୍ଦକୁ ଦେବତା, ଷଡ୍ଜାଦି ସ୍ୱର, ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଓ ଗୋତ୍ର-ସଂଜ୍ଞା ସହ ଯୋଡ଼ି ଧର୍ମସମ୍ମତ ଶାସ୍ତ୍ର କରନ୍ତି। ଶେଷରେ ନ୍ୟୁନ/ଅଧିକ ଅକ୍ଷର (ଅବରାଟ/ଅଧିକ) ଦୋଷ ଓ ପାଦ-ଦେବତା କ୍ରମପାଠରେ ସନ୍ଦେହ-ନିରାକରଣ ବିଧି ଦିଆଯାଏ।
