RV 5.43 is a wide-ranging invocation to the Viśve Devāḥ, envisioned as nourishing, joy-bringing powers that pour “milk and honey” of abundance into the sacrificer’s life. Moving through key divine helpers (notably Pūṣan and Vāyu, and concluding with the Aśvins), the hymn asks for rayi (plenitude), vāja (effective force and victory), guidance, protection, and “deathless” good fortune.

Mantra 1

आ धेनवः पयसा तूर्ण्यर्था अमर्धन्तीरुप नो यन्तु मध्वा । महो राये बृहतीः सप्त विप्रो मयोभुवो जरिता जोहवीति ॥

Let the milch-cows of abundance come to us quickly with their milk, unwithheld, with honeyed sweetness. For the great plenitude, the seer calls aloud to the seven vast, joy-bringing powers.

Mantra 2

आ सुष्टुती नमसा वर्तयध्यै द्यावा वाजाय पृथिवी अमृध्रे । पिता माता मधुवचाः सुहस्ता भरेभरे नो यशसावविष्टाम् ॥

Let the good praise be set in motion with reverence, O Heaven and Earth, for the plenitude of force. Father and Mother, sweet of speech and skilled of hand, in each bearing of life may you protect us with glory.

Mantra 3

अध्वर्यवश्चकृवांसो मधूनि प्र वायवे भरत चारु शुक्रम् । होतेव नः प्रथमः पाह्यस्य देव मध्वो ररिमा ते मदाय ॥

O Adhvaryus, having prepared the honeyed offerings, bring forward to Vāyu the lovely, bright draught. Like a first Hotṛ for us, protect this, O god; we have given you the honey for your gladness.

Mantra 4

दश क्षिपो युञ्जते बाहू अद्रिं सोमस्य या शमितारा सुहस्ता । मध्वो रसं सुगभस्तिर्गिरिष्ठां चनिश्चदद्दुदुहे शुक्रमंशुः ॥

Ten swift ones yoke their arms to the pressing-stone for Soma—those skilled, good-handed shapers. From the honeyed essence, the well-grasping beam milks out the bright stream from the mountain-held source, flowing and settling into its course.

Mantra 5

असावि ते जुजुषाणाय सोमः क्रत्वे दक्षाय बृहते मदाय । हरी रथे सुधुरा योगे अर्वागिन्द्र प्रिया कृणुहि हूयमानः ॥

For you who accept, Soma has been pressed—toward will and skill, toward the vast gladness. Yoke your two tawny powers to the well-yoked chariot and come near, O Indra; being called, make this offering dear and effective.

Mantra 6

आ नो महीमरमतिं सजोषा ग्नां देवीं नमसा रातहव्याम् । मधोर्मदाय बृहतीमृतज्ञामाग्ने वह पथिभिर्देवयानैः ॥

Bring to us the great Aramati, in harmony— the goddess, the divine Lady, reverently, she who bears the offering. For the ecstasy of honeyed delight, O Agni, carry her by the god-travelling paths—vast, knowing the Truth-Order.

अञ्जन्ति यं प्रथयन्तो न विप्रा वपावन्तं नाग्निना तपन्तः । पितुर्न पुत्र उपसि प्रेष्ठ आ घर्मो अग्निमृतयन्नसादि ॥

The illumined seers anoint and widen that Flame; they foster him as one nurtures the offering, as with fire they kindle the heat of transformation. Like a son dear to his father, the beloved Warmth comes near; establishing the right rhythm (ṛta), it takes its seat in Agni within us.

अच्छा मही बृहती शंतमा गीर्दूतो न गन्त्वश्विना हुवध्यै । मयोभुवा सरथा यातमर्वाग्गन्तं निधिं धुरमाणिर्न नाभिम् ॥

May the great, wide, most peace-bringing Word go straight like a messenger to call the Aśvins. O bringers of delight, come with your well-yoked chariot towards us, arriving like the hidden treasure and like the axle’s hub that holds the course.

Mantra 9

प्र तव्यसो नमउक्तिं तुरस्याहं पूष्ण उत वायोरदिक्षि । या राधसा चोदितारा मतीनां या वाजस्य द्रविणोदा उत त्मन् ॥

I send forth a word of homage to the strong and swift— to Pūṣan and also to Vāyu—those who by their plenitude impel our thoughts, those who grant the substance of the Vāja, and who themselves are that very self-force within.

Mantra 10

आ नामभिर्मरुतो वक्षि विश्वाना रूपेभिर्जातवेदो हुवानः । यज्ञं गिरो जरितुः सुष्टुतिं च विश्वे गन्त मरुतो विश्व ऊती ॥

O Jātavedas, calling them, bring the Maruts—all of them—by their names and by their forms. Let them come to the sacrifice, to the singer’s inspired words and well-shaped praise: the Maruts, universal in their help, come with universal protection.

Mantra 11

आ नो दिवो बृहतः पर्वतादा सरस्वती यजता गन्तु यज्ञम् । हवं देवी जुजुषाणा घृताची शग्मां नो वाचमुशती शृणोतु ॥

From the wide heaven, from the great mountain, let Sarasvatī—worthy of worship—come to our sacrifice. Accepting our call, the goddess of flowing clarity, eager, may she hear our strong and effective word.

Mantra 12

आ वेधसं नीलपृष्ठं बृहन्तं बृहस्पतिं सदने सादयध्वम् । सादद्योनिं दम आ दीदिवांसं हिरण्यवर्णमरुषं सपेम ॥

Seat in the dwelling the wise-forming power, the great one with dark-blue back—Bṛhaspati—in the session of the inner home. Seated in his own womb of establishment, shining forth, golden-hued, ruddy with force, may we accompany and serve him.

Mantra 13

आ धर्णसिर्बृहद्दिवो रराणो विश्वेभिर्गन्त्वोमभिर्हुवानः । ग्ना वसान ओषधीरमृध्रस्त्रिधातुशृङ्गो वृषभो वयोधाः ॥

Let Dharṇasi, rejoicing from the vast heaven, come when invoked with all the affirming cries. Wearing the goddesses, the herbs, unfailing—threefold-horned, a bull who upholds life-powers—may he arrive.

मातुष्पदे परमे शुक्र आयोर्विपन्यवो रास्पिरासो अग्मन् । सुशेव्यं नमसा रातहव्याः शिशुं मृजन्त्यायवो न वासे ॥

At the Mother’s highest luminous station the seekers, eager in their quest, have arrived. With adoration, offering their oblations, they make ready what is fit to be well-served; as if cleansing a child, they purify the life-force as one cleans a garment.

Mantra 15

बृहद्वयो बृहते तुभ्यमग्ने धियाजुरो मिथुनासः सचन्त । देवोदेवः सुहवो भूतु मह्यं मा नो माता पृथिवी दुर्मतौ धात् ॥

A wide and vast vitality we join to you, O Agni; the twin workers of thought move together with you. God among gods, be easy to call for me; let not our Mother Earth place us into a crooked mind.

उरौ देवा अनिबाधे स्याम ॥

O gods, may we be in the wide, unobstructed space—free from all constraint.

Mantra 17

समश्विनोरवसा नूतनेन मयोभुवा सुप्रणीती गमेम । आ नो रयिं वहतमोत वीराना विश्वान्यमृता सौभगानि ॥

May we arrive in harmony under the fresh help of the Ashvins—by their bliss-bringing, right-leading guidance. Bring to us the rayi, the plenitude of inner felicity, and also the heroes (powers of the soul); bring all the deathless fortunes that widen our being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Viśve Devāḥ means “All the Gods.” In RV 5.43 it is a way of invoking the whole supporting divine order—many powers working together to bring protection, guidance, and increase.

It is a poetic image for abundance and nourishment. The ‘cows’ represent flowing sources of plenty—food, wealth, joy, and inner strength—coming to the worshipper without obstruction.

They represent specific helpful functions within the all-gods prayer: Pūṣan guides on paths, Vāyu impels movement and thought, and the Aśvins bring fresh help, healing, and right-leading progress toward good fortune.
