Mantra 1

आ व इन्द्रं क्रिविं यथा वाजयन्तः शतक्रतुम् । मंहिष्ठं सिञ्च इन्दुभिः ॥

Come to Indra—draw him near as the Krivi do—exalting the Lord of a hundred workings. Pour upon the most bountiful one the Soma-drops, so the power of victory may awaken in us.

Mantra 2

शतं वा यः शुचीनां सहस्रं वा समाशिराम् । एदु निम्नं न रीयते ॥

Whether he brings a hundred of the bright powers or a thousand of the perfectly joined plenitudes—still he does not sink into the low place; the giver’s force does not fail or slide downward.

Mantra 3

सं यन्मदाय शुष्मिण एना ह्यस्योदरे । समुद्रो न व्यचो दधे ॥

When these powers are gathered for the ecstasy of the strong One, for in his belly they are held; like an ocean he contains vast wideness.

Mantra 4

अयमु ते समतसि कपोत इव गर्भधिम् । वचस्तच्चिन्न ओहसे ॥

This (word) of ours comes to you and settles in you, like doves to their nest; even that speech you foster for our increase.

Mantra 5

स्तोत्रं राधानां पते गिर्वाहो वीर यस्य ते । विभूतिरस्तु सूनृता ॥

A hymn to you, lord of plenitudes, bearer of the inspired chants; O hero, may your wide manifestation become for us a true and luminous utterance.

Mantra 6

ऊर्ध्वस्तिष्ठा न ऊतयेऽस्मिन्वाजे शतक्रतो । समन्येषु ब्रवावहै ॥

Stand upright for our help, O Shatakratu, in this plenitude of force; and in the other contests too may we speak together (in harmony and victory).

Mantra 7

योगेयोगे तवस्तरं वाजेवाजे हवामहे । सखाय इन्द्रमूतये ॥

In every joining, in every gaining of force, we call Indra the more puissant, as friends, for his saving help.

Mantra 8

आ घा गमद्यदि श्रवत्सहस्रिणीभिरूतिभिः । वाजेभिरुप नो हवम् ॥

He will come indeed, if he heeds—coming near with thousandfold helps and with plenitudes of force—to our call.

अनु प्रत्नस्यौकसो हुवे तुविप्रतिं नरम् । यं ते पूर्वं पिता हुवे ॥

Following the ancient home, I call the man of vast power; him whom your father of old called before.

Mantra 10

तं त्वा वयं विश्ववारा शास्महे पुरुहूत । सखे वसो जरितृभ्यः ॥

You—that one—we, who seek all desirable plenitudes, instruct and implore, O much-invoked; O friend, O giver of wealth, (be) for the singers.

Mantra 11

अस्माकं शिप्रिणीनां सोमपाः सोमपाव्नाम् । सखे वज्रिन्त्सखीनाम् ॥

Of us—of the shining-cheeked ones—O drinker of Soma among Soma-drinkers, O vajra-bearer, be the friend of friends.

Mantra 12

तथा तदस्तु सोमपाः सखे वज्रिन्तथा कृणु । यथा त उश्मसीष्टये ॥

So let it be, O Soma-drinker; O friend, O vajra-bearer, do it so—so that we may desire you for the offering and its fulfillment.

Mantra 13

रेवतीर्नः सधमाद इन्द्रे सन्तु तुविवाजाः । क्षुमन्तो याभिर्मदेम ॥

May the opulent powers of increase be ours in the shared ecstasy with Indra—rich in abundant force; with them may we grow luminous and exult in the inner rapture.

Mantra 14

आ घ त्वावान्त्मनाप्तः स्तोतृभ्यो धृष्णवियानः । ऋणोरक्षं न चक्र्योः ॥

Yes—coming with thy own self-possessed power, thou earnest to the singers, O bold one; thou settest free the axle, as it were, for the wheels—removing the inner obstruction to the movement.

Mantra 15

आ यद्दुवः शतक्रतवा कामं जरितॄणाम् । ऋणोरक्षं न शचीभिः ॥

When thou drawest near the service (devotion), O hundred-powered one, fulfilling the desire of the singers, then by thy effective powers thou releasest the axle—making the inner movement possible.

Mantra 16

शश्वदिन्द्रः पोप्रुथद्भिर्जिगाय नानदद्भिः शाश्वसद्भिर्धनानि । स नो हिरण्यरथं दंसनावान्त्स नः सनिता सनये स नोऽदात् ॥

Ever does Indra win the treasures by powers that press forward, by forces that resound, by energies that persist. May he—master of luminous workings—grant us the golden chariot; may he be our winner for the winning, may he give to us.

Mantra 17

आश्विनावश्वावत्येषा यातं शवीरया । गोमद्दस्रा हिरण्यवत् ॥

O Aśvins, come with this offering-force rich in horses—by vigorous energy; O wondrous ones, bring the wealth of luminous herds and the golden plenitude (light and delight).

Mantra 18

समानयोजनो हि वां रथो दस्रावमर्त्यः । समुद्रे अश्विनेयते ॥

For your chariot, O wondrous ones, is yoked in one and the same harmony—deathless; it moves in the ocean of being, O Aśvins, advancing in its vastness.

Mantra 19

न्यघ्न्यस्य मूर्धनि चक्रं रथस्य येमथुः । परि द्यामन्यदीयते ॥

You fixed the wheel of the chariot upon the head of the un-slain (the inviolate power); and another (wheel/power of motion) moves around the heaven—establishing right revolutions in the luminous realms.

Mantra 20

कस्त उषः कधप्रिये भुजे मर्तो अमर्त्ये । कं नक्षसे विभावरि ॥

Who is it, O Dawn, dear to the seeker, that enjoys thy mortal gift within thy immortal presence? Whom dost thou reach, O wide-shining one—bringing the awakening light?

Mantra 21

वयं हि ते अमन्मह्यान्तादा पराकात् । अश्वे न चित्रे अरुषि ॥

We indeed have known thee—from the near to the farthest limit—like a bright steed, O ruddy-shining one: the swift bearer of awakening light.

Mantra 22

त्वं त्येभिरा गहि वाजेभिर्दुहितर्दिवः । अस्मे रयिं नि धारय ॥

Come hither with those plenitudes of force, O Daughter of Heaven; set firmly within us the rayi—the fullness of being and luminous prosperity.

Frequently Asked Questions
