Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament for Karṇa and Renunciation-Oriented Self-Assessment
mayā nisṛṣṭaṃ pāpaṃ hi parigraham bhīpsatā
Desire for acquisition (parigraha) can become the root-cause that unleashes wrongdoing; ethical life requires vigilance about possessiveness and the motives behind action, especially for a ruler whose choices affect many.
In the reflective mood of Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira voices remorse and self-blame, acknowledging that his own longing for gain and possession helped set the conditions for moral harm.
