The verse models disciplined inquiry joined with reverence: when confronted with an extraordinary event, one should seek clarification from a trustworthy authority, and ask only what is 'śrotavya'—appropriate and beneficial to hear.
Sanjaya reports a moment of astonishment and questioning addressed to Kṛṣṇa (as Yadunandana), requesting an explanation of a great marvel that has occurred, provided Kṛṣṇa deems it suitable to disclose.
