Educational Q&A

The verse teaches indriya-nigraha (restraint and protection of the senses): when the senses are governed like horses by a skilled charioteer, they become instruments of one’s welfare rather than causes of downfall.

In the Ashramavāsika context, the narration turns didactic: Vaiśampāyana conveys counsel emphasizing disciplined living—urging the listener to keep the senses under control, using the analogies of a charioteer managing horses and wealth that yields benefit only when safeguarded.
