This verse shows that a participant may request or accept an allotted portion in a Soma sacrifice, but the request is tied to motive—here, Durvāsā’s acceptance is coupled with a desire for youth and beauty.
Durvāsā approached the Aśvinī-kumāras (renowned divine physicians) asking them to grant him youth and an attractive form, and he linked this request to accepting a Soma portion in the sacrifice.
It cautions that spiritual or religious acts can become mixed with personal vanity or desire; one should examine motives and pursue devotion and self-discipline rather than external beauty as the goal.
